JSC "KANAT"
History
The rope making developed in Russia as a folk craft from the time immemorial. The greatest development, which was expressed in creation of high-grade industrial manufacture, it has received during the reign of Peter 1, when the national navy was being created. The ropes were initially made in Moscow and other Russian towns, but later their manufacture was concentrated in St.Petersburg. The following instruction was issued by Commerce Collegium in January, 1716 : " His Imperial Magesty orders not to make ropes in Moscow . All the rope makers and spinners are to be sent to the city of St.Petersburg in order that they shall become the workforce of a business to start early in March. " The growth and development of privately-owned rope manufacture was rapid due to the city's own tremendows expansion and progress and active shipbuilding. 12 handicraft workshops making ropes have been located on Petrovsky island and provided with their products the Admiralty shipyards. The "Ropes (KANAT) factory" was founded on July 27, 1800 by the Petersburg merchant named I. Gotha who had bought a land lot on Petrovsky island from the priest of Lutheran Church. All individual handicraftsmen became the workers of the new ropes factory. Since then factory "ROPE" (KANAT), more than two centuries did not change the specialization and address, and after sequence of renamings, in 1993, the historical name was returned to it. The ropes of the enterprise were known all over the world. They are awarded with golden medals at exhibitions in Boston, Chicago, St.-Petersburg, Paris, Milan. They were on sale in England, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, Cuba, countries of Southern America, Africa, Asia.
Only once the factory stopped its manufacture - from 1941 till 1943, during World War II when the equipment was evacuated. In1943 the destroyer "Stoykiy" (subsequently " the Vice-admiral Drozd") fired on fascist positions by the territory of the factory . The workers of the factory, which have stayed in besieged Leningrad, actively participated in construction of the defences, entered into air-defence system . In March, 1943 the factory has recommenced manufacture of ropes, keenly required in the country . In1971 Leningrad State factory "ROPE"(KANAT) was consolidated with Leningrad Cord factory "NEVA ", and in August, 1976 the Narva linen-jute factory was joined up to this association, therefore the enterprise " Leningrad industrial enterprise of hemp-jute twisted articles "Neva" was formed. In the consequent years the factories were again divided, then there was a short period of entry into the structure of Concern "Rostextile", until in April 1993 the Joint-stock Company "ROPE"(KANAT) was created which continues successfull work in the market up till now.
